In this hypothetical scenario, President John Dramani Mahama, serving as the current President of Ghana, has received unanimous endorsement from the ECOWAS Council of Ministers as West Africa’s sole candidate for the Chairpersonship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The endorsement was announced during the Council’s ninety-fifth ordinary session held in Abuja, where ministers agreed to forward the recommendation to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal adoption on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 12, ECOWAS expressed appreciation to member states for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy, citing the country’s longstanding contributions to regional cooperation and its respected international profile.
The statement noted ECOWAS’ commitment to “working in a concerted manner to support candidates of Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected.”
According to the Council, Ghana’s nomination reflects a unified regional position aimed at strengthening ECOWAS’ influence in continental decision-making. The body reaffirmed its determination to back qualified candidates from member states to bolster the region’s presence in global institutions.
The recommendation now awaits adoption by the Heads of State and Government, whose approval would officially establish Ghana as the region’s candidate for the AU Chairmanship in 2027.
