The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to march to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, July 13, to demand answers over the arrest of the party’s Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said the protest is aimed at seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest, which the NPP believes raises concerns about due process and the treatment of opposition members.
Speaking on Channel One News on Sunday, July 12, Nana Boakye alleged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye was arrested without any prior invitation or notification from EOCO regarding any investigation or alleged wrongdoing.
He questioned the basis for the arrest and called on the state agency to provide transparency on the matter.
“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” Nana Boakye stated.
The NPP National Organiser stressed that the party supports accountability and would cooperate with lawful investigations involving its members, but insisted that the rights of individuals must be respected and proper procedures followed.
According to him, the alleged manner in which the arrest was carried out reflects a worrying trend of using state institutions to intimidate political opponents.
The planned march follows claims by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, that Dennis Miracles Aboagye was arrested by EOCO officials with the assistance of Immigration officers at the Accra International Airport.
In a Facebook post, Justin Kodua alleged that lawyers for Mr Aboagye have been denied access to him, his whereabouts remain unknown, and no charges have been filed against him.
The party is expected to use the protest to demand information from EOCO on the reasons behind the arrest and the current status of any investigations involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
As of the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement responding to the allegations made by the NPP.
