The Ghana Black Stars have secured qualification to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Ghana entered the fixture already assured of progression following results in earlier group games, with four points from their opening two matches proving sufficient under FIFA’s expanded World Cup format to book a place in the knockout stage.
Croatia, however, came into the match needing a positive result to keep their own qualification hopes alive and started the stronger of the two sides.
The Europeans took the lead in the first half when Petar Sučić finished off a well-worked move, assisted by Mateo Kovačić, to give Croatia a deserved 1-0 advantage at the break.
Ghana struggled to find rhythm in attack during the opening half but returned from the interval with greater urgency and attacking intent.
Their pressure eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen rose to meet a cross from Ernest Nuamah, heading home the equaliser to bring the Black Stars level and briefly reignite hopes of an unbeaten group stage finish.
However, Ghana’s joy was short-lived. Croatia restored their lead in the 83rd minute through Nikola Vlašić, who calmly finished after a pinpoint assist from veteran captain Luka Modrić.
Despite late pressure from the Black Stars in search of another equaliser, Croatia held firm defensively to secure all three points and close their group campaign on a high note.
Although the defeat ended Ghana’s unbeaten run in the tournament, earlier victories over Panama and a draw against England ensured the West African side accumulated enough points to progress to the Round of 32.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz will now turn his attention to the knockout stage, where Ghana will aim to continue their World Cup journey and push for a place in the last 16.
The Round of 32 draw and Ghana’s next opponent will be confirmed after the completion of the remaining group-stage fixtures.
