The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted Inspector Hance Atubra to the rank of Chief Inspector following his courageous intervention during a fire outbreak at Aboso in the Western Region.
The promotion comes after Inspector Atubra, who is stationed at the Tarkwa Divisional Headquarters, demonstrated exceptional bravery while helping residents escape a fire that swept through parts of the Aboso Main Lorry Station on Wednesday, August 26.
Several shops were caught in the blaze, resulting in considerable damage to property and putting people within the area at serious risk.
Inspector Atubra was reportedly among the first police officers to reach the scene. Rather than waiting for the situation to stabilise, he immediately joined efforts to get people out of the affected area.
He moved into areas threatened by the spreading flames, assisting trapped individuals and directing them towards safer locations.
His quick intervention helped ensure that people in the path of the fire were evacuated before the situation became even more dangerous.
Residents and eyewitnesses at the scene reportedly praised the officer for his courage, quick thinking and commitment to protecting lives during the emergency.
Following an assessment of his actions, a recommendation was made for Inspector Atubra to be recognised for his exceptional conduct and dedication to duty.
The IGP subsequently approved the recommendation and promoted him from Inspector to Chief Inspector.
The promotion is being seen as recognition of the important role police officers can play beyond conventional law enforcement, particularly during emergencies where swift action can make a critical difference.
Meanwhile, the Aboso Main Lorry Station fire left several shops damaged, with property owners counting their losses after the incident.
