The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered the seizure of his travel documents, effectively barring him from leaving the country while investigations into the case continue.
Abronye was arrested on May 13 and has since been in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). He is currently facing two charges: offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.
The court had earlier adjourned proceedings on Wednesday, May 20, after the prosecution requested additional time to file its response to the bail application. The request was challenged by defence counsel, led by Godfred Yeboah Dame, who argued that the Republic had already been served with the application on May 14, 2026.
However, Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali maintained that although the application had been served, the time period constituted only three clear days rather than six, and insisted that the prosecution required more time to consult investigators and adequately prepare its response.
In its ruling, the court noted that it had carefully considered the request by the prosecution and was obliged to grant it while ensuring a balance between the demands of justice and the rights of the accused.
The case has generated significant political discussion, both within the NPP and among the general public, given Abronye’s prominence as one of the party’s outspoken regional executives.
