Media Must Remain Responsible Partner in National Security – David Tamakloe PRINPAG President

The President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), David Tamakloe, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and national security institutions to promote accurate, responsible and conflict-sensitive journalism in Ghana.

According to him, the media has an important role to play in strengthening national cohesion, democratic governance and public safety, particularly at a time when security issues are becoming increasingly complex.

Mr Tamakloe made the call on Saturday, August 29, 2026, when he welcomed participants to a capacity-building workshop on “Responsible Security Reporting” at the Platinum Bay Hotel at Abokobi in Accra.

The workshop, organised in collaboration with the National Security Council Secretariat under the theme “Media as a Strategic Partner in National Security,” seeks to improve the capacity of private newspapers and online news publishers to report on security matters accurately and professionally.

Mr Tamakloe said the training was particularly important because journalists reporting on security-related developments must understand the potential consequences of inaccurate or irresponsible reporting.

He urged participants selected for the programme to become ambassadors of the knowledge gained and share the lessons with colleagues in their respective media organisations.

The PRINPAG President expressed appreciation to the National Security Council Secretariat for partnering with the association to organise the training.

He said the partnership demonstrated the importance of bringing security institutions and the media together to strengthen Ghana’s democracy and protect the public interest.

Mr Tamakloe also appealed to national security institutions and other allied agencies to provide greater support to media associations and practitioners.

He argued that journalists and media organisations require adequate resources, professional development and institutional support to effectively perform their watchdog role.

Beyond resources, however, he stressed the need for journalists to uphold high ethical standards.

He urged media practitioners to prioritise accuracy, professionalism, integrity and the national interest when reporting on sensitive security matters.

“Resource alone is not enough,” he said, stressing that journalists must use their integrity to defend the journalism profession and maintain public confidence in the media.

Mr Tamakloe further urged members of PRINPAG who were unable to attend the workshop to continue adhering to the principles of accuracy, responsibility, professionalism and conflict-sensitive journalism.

He said the media must work to ensure that journalism continues to serve as an important pillar of democracy and a reliable source of information for citizens.

He also encouraged participants at the workshop to actively engage with facilitators, share their experiences and build professional networks that could strengthen responsible journalism beyond the training programme.

The PRINPAG President reaffirmed the association’s commitment to defending professional journalism, saying the media had a continuing responsibility to contribute to a safer, better-informed and more united Ghana.

The workshop brought together representatives of the National Security Council Secretariat, security experts, media executives, veteran journalists, PRINPAG members and representatives of the Cyber Security Authority.
