Ghana has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the release of two of its citizens being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine, following high-level talks between Ghanaian authorities and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed in a Facebook post that he was hosted by President Zelenskyy in Ukraine earlier today, where discussions centered on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of the detained nationals.
According to Ablakwa, the meeting was “fruitful,” with both sides engaging in constructive dialogue aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of the Ghanaian citizens under international law. He conveyed the gratitude of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Zelenskyy for safeguarding the rights of the detainees.
Beyond the immediate humanitarian concerns, the bilateral talks also addressed the growing threat of trafficking networks that lure vulnerable African youth into conflict zones under false pretenses. The discussions explored collaborative strategies between Ghana and Ukraine to combat such networks and prevent further exploitation.
“I am optimistic that we shall be successful in our negotiations,” Ablakwa stated, expressing confidence in ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The meeting also signaled a broader push to deepen relations between Accra and Kyiv. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in key sectors including agriculture, defence, education, and trade.
In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Zelenskyy extended a formal invitation to President Mahama to visit Kyiv, as Ukraine seeks to elevate its diplomatic engagement with Ghana.
Ablakwa reaffirmed the Ghanaian government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, stating that “every Ghanaian life matters to the Mahama Administration.”
The engagement marks a notable step in Ghana-Ukraine relations, blending humanitarian diplomacy with long-term strategic cooperation.
