The Ghana Armed Forces have confirmed the death of one of its personnel following an accident during a counter-terrorism training exercise in the Upper East Region.

The deceased soldier, identified as 218079 Private Adotey of the 6th Infantry Battalion, lost his life after an explosion occurred during a training operation in the Binduri Forest area.
The incident took place during “Exercise Storm Shield,” a military programme designed to enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of security personnel in dealing with emerging security threats, especially in border communities considered vulnerable to infiltration.
At the closing ceremony of the exercise, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, expressed deep regret over the tragedy. He described the late soldier as a dedicated serviceman who paid the ultimate price while in active duty.
He noted that while military training involves inherent risks, the loss of a soldier under such circumstances is always deeply painful for the Armed Forces.
Major General Gbetanu further indicated that investigations have been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion that led to the fatal incident.
He extended condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the wider military community, and called on personnel to observe a moment of silence in honour of the fallen soldier.
The Ghana Armed Forces have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening national security preparedness, even as they mourn the loss of one of their own during training operations.
