More than 40,000 registered voters in the Ayawaso East Constituency are expected to cast their ballots on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament in a crucial by-election.

The poll was necessitated by the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which left the seat vacant and prompted the Electoral Commission to organize a fresh election.
The two main political parties have already settled on their candidates following internal primaries. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nominated Baba Ali to contest the seat, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has assured residents of a smooth, transparent and orderly voting process.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, said the Commission has put all necessary measures in place to guarantee a credible election.
“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision,” he stated.
He also cautioned against unlawful acts, particularly vote-buying and other forms of electoral malpractice, warning that any individual or group found culpable would face sanctions.
Meanwhile, security personnel have been deployed to polling stations across the constituency to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.
The outcome of Tuesday’s by-election will determine who represents Ayawaso East in Parliament following the untimely passing of the late MP.
