Ghana’s diplomatic history marked a major milestone on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, as Madam Sabah Zita Benson became the first woman to serve as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since independence in 1957.

The historic moment occurred during the presentation of her Letters of Credence to King Charles III at St James’s Palace in London, formally inaugurating her posting.
Her appointment not only represents progress in gender inclusion within Ghana’s foreign service but also underscores the country’s commitment to inclusive leadership and equal representation at the highest levels of diplomacy.
In another unprecedented development, Madam Benson became the first High Commissioner to be formally received by a British monarch at St James’s Palace since 1910, when a similar ceremony last took place during the reign of King Edward VII.
Diplomatic observers say the event reflects renewed engagement between Accra and London, with expectations that her leadership will advance cooperation in trade, education, culture and governance.
Government officials note that her posting symbolizes a new chapter in Ghana–UK relations, combining historic significance with forward-looking diplomacy.
