Two officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been released on bail after being detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe—widely known as Abronye DC—was arrested in connection with alleged threats made toward a presiding judge at the Adenta Circuit Court. Meanwhile, the Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, was picked up over claims of false publication.
Both men were granted bail on Monday, April 13, following their interaction with the CID in Accra.
Speaking to the media after their release, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and professionalism in the execution of their duties. He emphasized the need for tolerance, particularly in politically sensitive matters.
Also addressing journalists, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, criticized the arrests, describing them as a calculated move to shift public focus away from what he termed the government’s poor performance.
According to him, the current administration is facing increasing public dissatisfaction over several unresolved issues, including delays in passing the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, rising unemployment, high costs of doing business at the ports, and the implementation of the ORAL agenda.
He further alleged that the pressure stemming from these challenges has resulted in what he described as the targeting and harassment of opposition party members.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to provide further details on the conditions of the bail or the next steps in the investigations.
