The National Youth Delegate Ghana of the Commonwealth Youth Council Ms Bridget Nana Yaa Wilson, in partnership with the All-Africa Students Union (AASU), the National Youth Authority (NYA), and Penyman Group Limited, successfully organised the 2025 International Youth Day celebration at Accra High School on August 28, 2025.
The event was observed under the theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond: Preparing Students for Sustainable Actions in Ghana.”
The programme brought together more than 500 students from across the Greater Accra and Central Region, including students from Accra High School, Breman Asikuma Secondary School, Odoben Senior High School and Christian International School- Brakwa.
The event created a unique platform for students to explore the relevance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how their education and choices can contribute to sustainable action at both local and national levels.
The celebration was graced by several dignitaries, including the the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Mr. Inusah Mahama; the Chief Operations Officer of the All-Africa Students Union, Jemilatu Mamshie Bawa, the Chief Executive Officer of Penyman Group Limited, Mr. Eric Kwesi Taylor and the Programs and Partnership Manager of Green Advocacy Ghana, Mr. Daniel Owiredu.
The event featured keynote addresses and an interactive workshops sessions which inspired students to take up leadership roles in their schools and communities.
Speakers underscored the urgency of student-led action in addressing issues such as climate change, unemployment, inequality, and education gaps. In her speech Ms. Bridget said, “As we engage with the SDGs, it is essential to localize and contextualize these goals. Each SDG presents an incredible opportunity to translate global aspirations into actionable steps within our communities and even here at school. From tree planting initiatives to ensuring clean drinking water and collaborating on group projects, every action counts. Whether through environmental initiatives, educational programs, or social justice movements, our efforts can create a ripple effect that leads to meaningful change.”
Organizers and participants described the celebration as more than a commemoration, noting that it served as a strategic step in positioning young people as architects of Ghana’s sustainable development agenda. Students departed with renewed enthusiasm to initiate sustainability projects.
