The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged the President of Ghana to fulfil his promise to fight illegal mining known widely as galamsey.
Akufo-Addo had vowed to put his Presidency on the line in the fight against illegal mining in Ghana in view of the dangers the activities posed to the environment especially water bodies.
However, the fight seems to have failed several years after the vow as river bodies continue to deteriorate and several forest reserves are losing their lustre.
Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Awards held in Accra on September 28, 2024, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, urged the president to use the remaining three months to redeem his promise to the people of Ghana.
“We are aware that some time ago, Mr President, the father of the nation, made a firm vow to stop galamsey but regrettably that promise has not been fulfilled. Mr President, you have barely three months until the end of your administration, and we are hopeful that you’ll deal with the problem before you leave office,” he urged.
