The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has welcomed the final batch of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa following a recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The latest evacuation exercise brought home about 1,000 Ghanaians, bringing the total number of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa to approximately 1,900.
The returnees were received upon their arrival in Ghana as the government continues efforts to support citizens affected by the attacks and help them rebuild their lives after returning home.
As part of the government’s reintegration programme, the returnees have been provided with financial assistance and transportation allowances to support their immediate needs.
They are also receiving medical and psychosocial care, while arrangements have been made for free registration onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.
In addition, the government is providing ongoing employment assistance to help the returnees secure sustainable livelihoods and successfully reintegrate into their communities.
The evacuation and reintegration programme forms part of the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad and ensuring that citizens who return home under difficult circumstances receive the necessary support.
The successful completion of the exercise has also highlighted the government’s efforts to respond to the concerns of Ghanaians affected by the xenophobic attacks and facilitate their safe return to Ghana.
