The National Youth Authority’s (NYA) National Youth Clean-Up Exercise Festival has recorded a major success, with young people, community leaders and residents coming together across all district capitals in Ghana to promote environmental cleanliness and civic responsibility.
The nationwide exercise, held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, forms part of activities marking the 2026 National Youth Month Celebration and the observance of the National Sanitation Day (NSD).
The initiative saw thousands of young Ghanaians participate in communal cleaning activities aimed at improving sanitation and creating healthier communities. Participants worked together to desilt drains, sweep market areas, clear refuse, remove weeds and clean public spaces across various district capitals.
The exercise brought together youth groups, market women, assembly members, traditional and opinion leaders, local authorities and residents, demonstrating strong community support and collective commitment towards maintaining a clean environment.
The successful implementation of the programme highlights the important role of young people in national development and environmental stewardship. Through the exercise, the NYA continues to encourage youth participation in activities that promote responsible citizenship and community ownership.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Abdulai Ayariga, commended participants and stakeholders for their support, noting that the initiative reflects the Authority’s commitment to mobilising young people for positive national action.
He encouraged more Ghanaians, particularly students, apprentices, traders and community members, to actively participate in future communal labour exercises as part of efforts to build cleaner and more sustainable communities.
The NYA says the nationwide clean-up festival demonstrates that youth engagement goes beyond employment and skills development, extending to active participation in solving community challenges and contributing to Ghana’s overall development.
The successful exercise across all district capitals reinforces the message that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility requiring the commitment of every citizen.
