President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the economic and global branding opportunities presented by the FIFA World Cup, as Ghana prepares to take to the pitch this week.

Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address in Accra Months ago , the President highlighted the strategic importance of sports in driving national development, noting that Ghana’s participation in the global tournament goes beyond the pursuit of football glory.
According to him, the World Cup presents a unique platform to boost Ghana’s international image, attract investment, and stimulate economic activity through tourism and global exposure.
“Sport is not only about competition; it is also a powerful tool for economic growth and national branding,” President Mahama stated, emphasizing the need for Ghana to maximize the benefits of its fifth appearance at the mundial.
As the Black Stars gear up for their matches this week, the President also raised concerns about travel compliance for supporters heading to the United States. He urged fans to adhere strictly to visa regulations to safeguard Ghana’s improved international standing.
“It has taken significant effort to restore Ghana’s five-year non-immigrant visa status and remove us from the ban list. We must ensure that those who travel return as expected,” he cautioned.
Beyond the senior national team, President Mahama reiterated government’s commitment to developing sports across all levels, highlighting upcoming international engagements for women and youth teams.
President Mahama stressed that sustained investment in sports will not only enhance national pride but also create opportunities for young people and position Ghana strongly on the global stage.
As anticipation builds for Ghana’s World Cup fixtures this week, the government is optimistic that the tournament will serve as both a sporting milestone and an economic catalyst for the country.
