President John Dramani Mahama has met with the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing the need for party members to prioritise governance over premature political campaigning.

The meeting, held on Friday, May 29, 2026, focused on strengthening party unity, maintaining internal discipline, and rallying support for the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”
In a statement issued after the engagement, the Council of Elders expressed concern over reports of early presidential campaign activities by some individuals and groups within the party. It warned that such actions risk undermining cohesion and distracting from the government’s core responsibility of delivering on its mandate.
President Mahama, according to the Council, emphasised that the party’s immediate focus must remain on governance and improving the lives of Ghanaians, rather than engaging in internal political contests.
“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country,” the statement said.
The Council further referenced Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which outlines the procedures and timelines for electing a presidential candidate. It noted that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the authority to determine when such processes should begin.
It therefore stressed that, until official guidelines and timelines are announced, no individual or group is permitted to engage in any form of presidential campaign, whether directly or indirectly.
The Council directed all party members currently involved in such activities to cease immediately, including campaigning, mobilisation, and endorsements.
Reiterating its call for unity, the Council urged members to remain focused on supporting the government’s agenda, assuring that the appropriate time for internal competition would be communicated.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement concluded.
