The Court of Appeal has cleared the way for the release of former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu, following the withdrawal of a motion filed by the Attorney-General seeking to halt her release.
The Attorney-General’s Office on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, withdrew its application for a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s decision that acquitted and discharged Ms Tamakloe Attionu.
Following the withdrawal, the court struck out the motion as withdrawn, paving the way for the release warrant to be signed.
The development means Ms Tamakloe Attionu, who had been serving a 10-year sentence, is set to be released following the court’s decision to overturn her conviction.
A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal in July 2026 quashed her conviction and 10-year prison sentence on 78 corruption-related charges.
The panel, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, with Justices Samuel Obeng-Diawuo and Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe concurring, held that the trial judge had repeatedly shifted the burden of proof onto the appellant.
According to the court, this was contrary to the constitutional presumption of innocence.
The appellate court also found that the prosecution had failed to establish several of the charges against Ms Tamakloe Attionu beyond reasonable doubt.
Hours after the judgment, however, the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice filed a notice of appeal at the Supreme Court, indicating its dissatisfaction with the decision to acquit and discharge her.
The Attorney-General subsequently filed a motion for stay of execution at the Court of Appeal, seeking to prevent the implementation of the acquittal and discharge pending the determination of the case by the Supreme Court.
That application was withdrawn on Wednesday morning by Principal State Attorney Hilda Craig.
The prosecution has instead filed the application before the Supreme Court, which will now determine the matter.
With the Court of Appeal motion withdrawn and the release warrant signed, Ms Tamakloe Attionu is expected to regain her freedom while the Attorney-General’s appeal proceeds before the Supreme Court.
