President John Dramani Mahama has directed that a bill be submitted to Parliament to pave the way for the establishment of a National Defence University in Ghana.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed this during an inspection of the proposed university’s construction site at Teshie. He was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, as they assessed the progress and direction of work on the project.
According to Mr Iddrisu, the proposed National Defence University will integrate existing defence-related training institutions under a single administrative and academic framework. The initiative is expected to enhance professional military education, strengthen research capacity, and support strategic development within the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies.
He further revealed that funding for the project will be supported by the Ghana Education Trust Fund, underscoring the Ministry of Education’s commitment to ensuring the successful execution and completion of the facility.
The Chief of Defence Staff, William Agyapong, expressed appreciation to the Education Minister for his continued support for the initiative. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to advancing the project and ensuring it is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The establishment of the National Defence University is seen as a major step toward strengthening Ghana’s defence training architecture and positioning the country as a hub for advanced military education in the region.
