The Minority in Parliament has alleged that the government is attempting to divert public attention from the ongoing debate over the recent reduction in cocoa producer prices.
The allegation follows the announcement of a reduction of more than GH¢1,000 in the price of a bag of cocoa, a decision the government attributes to declining international market prices.
Addressing members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) at Parliament on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, claimed that the government is under pressure over the pricing decision and is seeking to shift focus away from the issue.
“There is a matter that is giving the government sleepless nights, and the government is struggling. So the government is finding a way to divert attention,” he stated.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin further alleged that there are deliberate efforts to draw members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into debates on unrelated controversies to dilute focus on the cocoa pricing concerns.
Reflecting on his previous experience as Majority Leader, he suggested that governments facing intense scrutiny sometimes adopt strategic communication approaches to manage political pressure.
“I’ve been a Majority Leader before, so I know that sometimes when you are hot, you must find a way of surviving,” he said.
He urged party members, particularly TESCON activists, to remain disciplined and consistent in their messaging until concerns surrounding the cocoa price reduction are addressed.
“On your platforms, when there is a matter that has gone viral, stay the course. When they bring something in, know that it’s a trap,” he cautioned.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also warned about the risks of misinformation on social media and advised political activists to remain focused.
“There is misinformation on social media. And if you’re a politician, you need to keep your eye on the ball,” he noted.
He encouraged party communicators to maintain sustained advocacy on the cocoa pricing issue, suggesting consistent messaging across social media platforms.
The government has previously explained that the revised cocoa producer price reflects prevailing global market conditions and is aimed at stabilising the sector.
