The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has expressed concern over what he describes as worsening indiscipline within the party, warning that it is gradually eroding its appeal among supporters.
According to him, the lack of firm leadership has contributed to growing internal challenges, making the party less attractive to both members and sympathisers.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, January 23, Mr. Osei Owusu argued that the NPP needs a strong and decisive National Chairman, comparable to the leadership style of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, to restore order and unity.
“It got to a point where most people are leaving the party to join the NDC, and the numbers keep increasing. So maybe there is someone attracting them,” he stated.
Mr. Osei Owusu attributed the NDC’s growing appeal largely to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah’s leadership approach, describing him as consistent, firm, and uncompromising when it comes to party discipline.
“What I have seen myself is Asiedu Nketiah. He is the one who has made the party attractive. You see the consistency; it’s visible. If you are there and you want to be stubborn, he will deal with you,” he added.
He further proposed that the NPP reconsider its current approach to internal elections, suggesting that leadership contests be temporarily suspended in favour of identifying and appointing a capable individual to steer the party through its current difficulties.
“To bring the appeal back, we have to restore discipline. I believe that if we continue with elections, we won’t get the person we need at this time. We should focus on searching for the right person and prepare to put the party in their hands,” he said.
Mr. Osei Owusu also mentioned former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, as a strong candidate capable of restoring unity and discipline within the party.
“If Boakye Agyarko says he will lead the party, I will stop what I am doing and support him. He is the person who can bring the discipline and everything we need right now to bring everyone back to the party,” he added.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the NPP about internal reforms, party cohesion, and strategies to strengthen its support base ahead of future elections.
