Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is once again at the centre of controversy following a reflective account by former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, who has raised troubling questions about the corrupting influence of political power.
In a LinkedIn post published on January 10, 2026, Prof. Moghalu recounted a personal experience involving an unnamed African friend—widely interpreted as Ofori-Atta—whose behaviour allegedly changed dramatically after assuming high political office in Ghana.
According to Prof. Moghalu, the individual had attended his 50th birthday celebration in Abuja before later being appointed a minister in his home country. However, once in office, repeated attempts to reach him on a professional matter were ignored.
“He did not pick my call. He did not respond to messages I sent,” Moghalu wrote, noting that other mutual friends shared similar frustrations and felt they could no longer recognise the person they once knew.
The account paints a picture of political elevation accompanied by personal distance and perceived arrogance—an issue Moghalu suggests is not uncommon among African leaders once power is attained.
The situation reportedly worsened after the minister’s party lost power, when he became the subject of corruption investigations and faced extradition efforts from his home country.
Although Prof. Moghalu cautioned that allegations do not amount to guilt unless proven in court, his reflections have added moral weight to the growing scrutiny surrounding Ofori-Atta, particularly as he now faces legal challenges abroad.
