The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has petitioned the National Youth Authority (NYA) to intervene in what it describes as ongoing harassment, intimidation, and extortion of its members by the Ghana Police Service, particularly officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Tesano.
In a letter dated October 27, 2025, and signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Abugri Timothy Agengri, the MCUG said its members continue to face “incessant harassment and intimidation” despite operating within the law.
The petition noted that recent incidents have seen some members allegedly arrested arbitrarily, detained, and their motorcycles impounded without due process—a situation the union says has severely affected their livelihoods and disrupted delivery services that many Ghanaians depend on.
“This treatment is unfair and unjustified, and we urge your office to intervene,” the petition stated.
The union has therefore made three key requests to the National Youth Authority:
To use its office to call for an immediate cessation of the harassment of motorcycle couriers by the police.
To set up a committee to investigate the ongoing issues between motorcycle riders and the Tesano MTTD Division, with representation from the union, the police, and relevant stakeholders.
To ensure that the committee’s findings and recommendations are implemented to prevent future occurrences and promote a better working relationship between motorcycle couriers and law enforcement.
MCUG expressed confidence that the NYA is “well-positioned” to help resolve the issue and protect the rights of its members.
“We look forward to your prompt attention to this petition and a favourable response,” the union’s General Secretary added.
The petition comes amid growing concerns among commercial motorcycle riders—commonly known as Okada and courier operators—about alleged police misconduct and the need for reforms in the enforcement of traffic regulations.
