Former Energy Minister and former NPP running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has reportedly cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against entertaining hopes of winning Ghana’s 2032 presidential election.
According to NAPO, the party should focus its efforts on the 2028 election, suggesting that victory in 2032 would not be possible if the party fails to return to power in 2028.
The comments could raise fresh concerns within the NPP about the party’s electoral prospects and its ability to rebuild after its defeat in the 2024 general election.
NAPO, who served as the running mate to then-NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 election, is said to have urged party members to work aggressively towards securing victory in 2028 rather than looking beyond that election.
His remarks are likely to fuel debate among party supporters, particularly at a time when the NPP is seeking to reorganise, rebuild its grassroots structures and position itself for the next presidential contest.
The warning also highlights the political pressure facing the party as it prepares for the 2028 elections, with internal discussions expected to intensify over its leadership, strategy and electoral message.
For NAPO, the immediate priority is clear: the NPP must fight hard to win in 2028 rather than assume it can wait until 2032 to regain power.
