The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has donated GH¢5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to support the national fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The donation, presented at a brief ceremony in Accra on Monday, September 15, is intended to strengthen the operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat, which coordinates efforts to curb the destructive practice.
The support is part of GoldBod’s broader commitment to improving gold traceability and promoting sustainable, responsible mining practices across the country.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, expressed appreciation for the gesture and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensifying the clampdown on illegal mining.
He revealed that the Ministry is working with the Attorney General’s office to fast-track the prosecution of offenders, and is also engaging the Ministry of Transport on measures to regulate the movement of excavators used in illegal mining operations.
