The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has assured that within the next 50 days, 70% of Accra’s faulty streetlights will be fixed as part of efforts to improve security and visibility in the city.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, February 3, the Regional Minister stressed that she will prioritise the the issue of faulty streetlights and work with the various MMDAs to restore them.

“In fact, within 50 days in office, all these things should be fixed. I will make sure that at least 70 percent of the streetlights should be fixed.

“So these are some of the things we are going to check, and like I said, I am going to work together with the MMDAs,” she stated.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister also announced the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day and a Cleanest City Award to promote a competitive and responsible approach to environmental sanitation in the region.

According to her, in line with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “Clean Up Ghana” agenda, a Regional Sanitation Day will be observed on the last Friday of every month to improve environmental cleanliness and waste management across the region.

She also announced security and sanitation as her key priority areas for the country’s capital city.

Speaking at an engagement with the management of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) on her first day in office, the minister emphasised that waste management and sanitation would be a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

She stated that her administration would implement a comprehensive sanitation policy that would encourage waste segregation and the provision of garbage bags and bins in public places and homes.
