Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno has filed a defamation lawsuit against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.
The suit, filed at the Accra High Court on Thursday (2 January), accuses Captain Smart of making defamatory statements during a radio and TV program on 27 December.
In the suit Captain Smart alleged that certain members of the Ghana Armed Forces and officials within the Ghana Police Service were planning to destabilize Ghana’s constitutional order through a coup d’état.
Smart further claimed that Mr. Yohuno’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically influenced and that he attended meetings to secure the position. He also alleged that Mr. Yohuno, while allegedly being a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), visited the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials and offered money to lobby for his appointment as IGP.
In response, Mr. Yohunu is seeking general damages for defamation, an injunction to stop the defendants from making further defamatory remarks, and a court order for them to retract their statements. He also demands unqualified apologies to be aired on three occasions on Onua TV and FM.
