The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced its decision to proceed with its National Delegates Conference as scheduled on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
This confirmation comes despite internal calls and a petition urging the party to postpone the event to allow more time for addressing pressing internal issues.
Following a thorough review of the petition, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council dismissed the request on Monda, July 14, citing extensive preparations and firm commitments already made for the conference.
Joseph Osei-Owusu, Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, confirmed the decision at a media briefing held after the Council meeting.
“There was a petition that the date for the conference should be changed. Our NEC, after considering it, decided that we should continue. Given the preparation and commitments that we have made, the conference will proceed as announced,” Mr. Osei-Owusu stated.
The upcoming conference is poised to be a pivotal moment for the NPP, with major constitutional reforms topping the agenda.
Delegates are expected to deliberate on proposed amendments stemming from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee report.
Additionally, a long-standing proposal from the party’s 2019 Delegates Conference in Kumasi, which was approved in principle but not formally adopted, is also set for final consideration and formal adoption during this conference. The party leadership views this event as a crucial opportunity to complete that long-awaited process.
Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s Director of Communications, emphasised the strategic importance of these constitutional reforms during a press briefing held ahead of the event. He highlighted that these amendments are fundamentally aimed at strengthening the party’s internal structures and strategically positioning it for future electoral victories, with a keen focus on the 2028 general elections.
“That report, which has a package of amendments—and proposals resulting from the Mike Oquaye Committee and other submissions by party members—is part of the bundle that this conference will consider,” Mr. Ahiagbah explained, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the reforms.
The NPP’s conference will be held under the unifying theme “Rebuilding Together With Our Values.”
