In a bold move to rein in government expenditure, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to all political appointees.
The directive, which takes effect immediately, forms part of a broader set of austerity measures aimed at reducing government spending and redirecting public resources to critical development priorities.
Spokesperson to the President and Member of Parliament, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the directive, describing it as a reflection of President Mahama’s firm commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible leadership.
“This is a clear demonstration that leadership must share in the sacrifices we are asking the people of Ghana to make,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.
The fuel cuts follow earlier cost-cutting measures introduced by the Mahama administration, including a reduction in the number of ministers and staff at the Presidency, and the discontinuation of satellite television subscriptions at government offices.
The government says the overall goal is to ensure that national resources are directed toward pressing social and economic needs, especially in the areas of infrastructure, health, and education.
