In a bid to revitalize the struggling Kumawood film industry, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has inaugurated a 17-member ministerial committee to spearhead efforts aimed at restoring the industry’s vibrancy.
The committee, which includes prominent figures such as veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu and actor Bill Asamoah, will be chaired by Bishop Ofori-Adu. It has been tasked with developing a strategic framework to rejuvenate the industry and create sustainable employment opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and other stakeholders.
During the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, March 4, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of unity among industry players, stressing that collective effort was key to securing government support.
“We as leaders of the country, all we need from you is to unite and work together, because that unity will encourage the president to push more effort to revive the industry. So unity is very key to us as far as the issue is concerned,” he stated.
Kumawood, which has been instrumental in promoting Ghanaian culture and storytelling, has experienced a downturn in recent years due to various challenges, including a shift in audience preferences and financial constraints. The establishment of the committee signals the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring the industry’s resurgence.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that with the right policy direction and governmental backing, Kumawood can reclaim its place as a major force in African cinema. The committee’s recommendations are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Ghana’s film industry and preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage through storytelling.
