Comedian and philanthropist Michael Blackson has announced his decision to officially join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the government’s successful payment of ₵6.081 billion in Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons.
In a social media post, Blackson expressed his excitement and relief after his school, the Michael Blackson Academy, finally received its due payments. This came after over $1 million of his funds had been locked up in investments during the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
“Look at God! This is a great start for all bondholders. As of today, I’m officially a member of the NDC party. @JDMahama, you just put a smile on the faces of the kids at my free school,” he wrote.
Blackson also took a swipe at the previous administration, stating that he never agreed to volunteer his money to save any nation.
The comedian’s declaration follows the government’s fulfillment of its DDEP obligations, as directed by President John Dramani Mahama.
A statement from the Ministry of Finance confirmed the payment of ₵6.081 billion in cash coupons to bondholders, alongside ₵3.46 billion in Payment-In-Kind (PIK), credited to respective securities accounts.
Additionally, ₵9.7 billion has been deposited into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account (Sinking Fund) to serve as a buffer for the fifth coupon payment due in July and August 2025.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring market confidence, stabilizing the Cedi, controlling inflation, and creating jobs through prudent fiscal policies.
