First Deputy Speaker Refutes Bribery Allegations Against Parliament’s Appointments Committee

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has strongly refuted accusations that members of the Committee demand bribes from ministerial nominees before their vetting.

The denial follows allegations made by activist Oliver Barker Vormawor, who accused the committee of soliciting bribes and challenged Mr Ahiafor, the committee chairman, to submit himself to an oral inquiry.

Addressing the committee ahead of the vetting of Defence Minister-designate Dr Omane Boamah on January 28, Mr Ahiafor emphatically rejected the claims and expressed his willingness to undergo an oral investigation if necessary.

In his statement, Mr. Ahiafor directed the clerk to formally invite Vormawor to appear before the committee and provide evidence to support the allegations he had made.

“I’m ever ready to submit myself to ORAL. We need to stop certain attitudes. So, therefore I Benarad Ahiafor, and the chairman of the committee want to place it on record that myself and the committee members don’t demand money from any nominees before vetting and approval.”
