President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), marking the first time the position has been filled from within the organization.
The announcement, made on January 24, 2025, highlights Rev. Ing. Fianko’s remarkable two-decade career in radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications, broadcasting regulation, and ICT innovation.
Beginning as a National Service Person at the NCA in 2004, Rev. Ing. Fianko steadily rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024. In this role, he managed Ghana’s radio frequency spectrum, promoted fair competition as Chair of the Significant Market Power Operations Team, and played a pivotal role in transitioning Ghana from analogue to digital broadcasting. His efforts led to the development of DTT receiver specifications, later adopted as ECOWAS standards.
Internationally, he has significantly influenced telecommunications policy through contributions to organizations like the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), ECOWAS, and the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM). In 2022, he was elected to the prestigious Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for a four-year term (2023–2026), reflecting his global recognition.
Rev. Ing. Fianko holds degrees in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (KNUST), Communications Management (Buckinghamshire New University), and Applied Business Leadership (Universidad Católica de Murcia). Beyond his technical expertise, he is a Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, a published author, and founder of the Nkwa.Life evangelistic outreach ministry.
Rev. Ing. Fianko succeeds Dr. Joe Anokye as Acting Director General, bringing extensive expertise and leadership to position Ghana’s communications industry for innovation and growth.
