President John Dramani Mahama has stepped up Ghana’s economic diplomacy following high-level discussions with senior executives of Amazon on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The engagement forms part of President Mahama’s broader efforts to reposition Ghana’s relationship with major American corporations, with greater emphasis on investment, technology, skills development, productive enterprise and job creation.
The discussions with Amazon come at a time when the government is seeking to deepen Ghana–US relations beyond traditional development assistance and place greater focus on trade, investment and strategic partnerships.
At a separate US-Ghana Presidential Roundtable this week, President Mahama called for a new chapter in Ghana–US relations centred on trade, investment, technology and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships.
The Amazon engagement received a significant public endorsement from David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, who described his discussions with President Mahama as productive.
Zapolsky also highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s efforts to expand broadband connectivity across Africa. He oversees Amazon’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs.
The engagement underscores an increasingly important dimension of Ghana’s economic diplomacy, as the government seeks to use high-level diplomatic relationships to attract global capital, technology, expertise and access to international markets.
Beyond broadband connectivity, closer engagement with Amazon could have wider implications for Ghana’s digital economy.
Improved high-speed internet access, particularly in rural and underserved communities, could support digital education, healthcare delivery, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship and e-commerce, while creating greater opportunities for young Ghanaians to participate in the global digital economy.
The development of stronger digital infrastructure could also support Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a competitive technology and digital hub in West Africa.
With Ghana hosting the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the country also seeks to leverage its strategic position as a potential gateway for international businesses looking to access the wider African market.
The engagement with Amazon therefore forms part of President Mahama’s wider push to attract strategic private-sector partnerships and position Ghana as a destination for investment, technology and innovation.
The government’s renewed emphasis on economic diplomacy reflects an effort to build stronger links between Ghana and leading global corporations while creating opportunities for investment, digital transformation, skills development and employment.
