Fresh allegations have emerged on social media claiming that some individuals are being promised cash incentives to participate in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6.
Several unverified social media posts have alleged that prospective participants are being offered GH¢300 to join the protest in an effort to attract large numbers. However, no evidence has been publicly presented to substantiate the claims, and the NPP has not commented on the allegations.
The latest claims follow similar allegations made during a previous NPP protest, where an individual on social media alleged that some participants received fuel and GH¢150 to take part in a demonstration at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). Other online videos and posts also purported to show some demonstrators demanding transport fares or allowances before leaving protest grounds. Those claims were widely circulated online but were not independently verified.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has granted the NPP permission to stage Thursday’s demonstration under the theme “Democracy Under Attack.” According to the party, the protest is intended to express concerns over what it describes as selective justice and interference with the judiciary following the acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.
Organisers say participants will assemble at 5:00 a.m. in front of the Supreme Court to present their first petition before marching through the Liberation Road and Ako Adjei Interchange area towards the Jubilee House.
As preparations continue, the allegations regarding alleged payments to participants remain unverified. No official evidence has been produced to support the claims, and authorities have not announced any investigation into the matter. The NPP has yet to issue a response to the allegations circulating on social media.
