The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has resumed crude oil processing following the completion of its first major turnaround maintenance in four years, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of Phase II of the Sentuo Oil Refinery on Thursday, June 25, the President said the development forms part of ongoing reforms in Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening local refining capacity.
He explained that the Petroleum Downstream Sector Reform Committee has completed its work and submitted key recommendations, which are now being implemented to enhance operations within the sector.
According to him, government is also working to improve the operational efficiency and overall capacity of TOR, with plans to further modernise the refinery to meet national energy demands.
President Mahama further disclosed that once the refinery reaches full ramped-up capacity in July, TOR is expected to receive a consignment of Ghana’s own crude oil for processing.
He noted that despite global geopolitical tensions and volatility in international energy markets, Ghana has maintained a stable and uninterrupted supply of petroleum products.
This, he said, has been made possible through coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the National Petroleum Authority, and other key industry stakeholders who have ensured continuous maintenance of strategic fuel reserves and nationwide fuel availability.
“I’m pleased to report that the Tema Oil Refinery has completed its first major turnaround maintenance exercise in four years and has resumed crude oil processing,” President Mahama stated. “Plans are also underway to enhance its operational efficiency and increase its refining capacity, and in July, when they fully ramp up capacity, they will also receive a parcel of Ghana’s own crude.”
The resumption of operations at TOR is expected to strengthen Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector and reduce reliance on imported refined products as reforms continue to take shape.
