High Court Injunction Dispute Sparks Allegations of Possible Contempt in Kristo Asafo Leadership Crisis

There is growing legal tension surrounding the leadership succession of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana after reports that a court-ordered injunction may have been in place before the installation of a new leader proceeded.
According to court documents cited in local reports, the Accra High Court had issued a restraining order relating to the planned installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I as successor to the late founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
Despite the reported injunction, the mission went ahead with the installation ceremony on June 21, 2026, announcing the new leader through its official communication channels, including social media posts and video messages celebrating the transition.
Allegations of Possible Contempt
Legal observers and parties involved in the dispute have raised concerns that proceeding with the installation after the issuance of a court injunction could amount to prima facie contempt of court.
However, legal experts caution that contempt is not automatically established simply by the occurrence of the event. The High Court would need to determine several factors, including whether:
the injunction was properly issued and in force at the time,
the affected parties had been formally served or were aware of the order,
and whether the actions taken clearly violated the scope of the court’s directive.
Ongoing Court Case
The dispute stems from a broader legal challenge filed by senior members of the mission, who are contesting the legitimacy of the succession process. The plaintiffs argue that constitutional amendments within the church may have altered the line of succession and are seeking to prevent recognition of the new leader until the matter is resolved.
The case has been described as one that could affect the unity and stability of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, which has already been dealing with internal tensions following the death of its founder in September 2025.
Broader Context
The succession controversy has also drawn wider public attention due to reports involving political figure Sarah Adwoa Safo, though those reports relate to separate incidents and have not been formally connected to the court proceedings.
Outlook
The Accra High Court is expected to continue hearing arguments on the matter, including whether any actions taken during the disputed period may constitute contempt. Until then, no formal finding has been made.
