President John Dramani Mahama has announced Ghana’s intention to deepen cooperation with Belarus in agriculture through technology transfer, skills development and investment as part of efforts to modernise the country’s agricultural sector.
Speaking during his state visit to Minsk, Belarus, President Mahama said the two countries were committed to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in agriculture, trade and industry.
The President’s remarks followed the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MOUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration between Ghana and Belarus. The agreements cover the establishment of a joint commission on trade and economic cooperation, cooperation between the chambers of commerce of both countries, and collaboration in the agricultural sector.
According to President Mahama, the agreements will provide a practical framework for governments, institutions and private sector actors in both countries to work together more effectively.
He noted that the MOUs would facilitate exchanges between the people of the two countries, reduce barriers to official engagements, promote trade and investment, and create new opportunities for economic growth and technological cooperation.
President Mahama said agriculture remains central to Ghana’s development agenda, stressing that the government’s goal is to transform the sector into a modern, technology-driven industry capable of creating jobs, supporting industrialisation, strengthening food security and improving livelihoods.
He said Ghana is implementing policies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, expanding irrigation, reducing post-harvest losses, promoting agro-processing and enhancing value addition across agricultural value chains.
The President highlighted Belarus’ achievements in agricultural mechanisation, farm technology, equipment manufacturing and agricultural research, describing them as areas where Ghana could benefit significantly through strategic partnerships.
“This visit marks an important moment in the relations between our two countries. It provides us an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to building a modern and forward-looking partnership that is founded on mutual respect, sovereign equality and practical cooperation
“By combining Ghana’s agricultural potential with Belarusian expertise and innovation, we can create partnerships that contribute to food security, industrial growth and shared prosperity,” he said.
President Mahama noted that although Ghana and Belarus are geographically distant, both countries share a common aspiration to promote prosperity, economic resilience, technological advancement and inclusive development.
He described the visit as an important milestone in relations between the two countries and an opportunity to strengthen a partnership built on mutual respect, sovereign equality and practical cooperation.
President Mahama was on Monday, June 8, accorded a ceremonial welcome in Minsk as part of his state visit to the Eastern European country.
He was received by senior Belarusian officials and later participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Victory Monument in honour of Belarusian and Soviet soldiers who died during World War II.
