John Dramani Mahama has announced a sweeping $130 million development package for the Savannah Region, outlining major investments in education, water supply, agriculture and road infrastructure as part of his ongoing “Resetting Ghana” tour.
The announcement was made during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Bole 24-hour economy market, where the President said he had deliberately delayed his visit until he had “enough good news” to present to residents.
Central to the package is the planned construction of a University of Science and Technology for the region. President Mahama disclosed that $30 million in funding has already been secured from the Chinese government, with negotiations at an advanced stage for an additional $100 million from other financing institutions. A site inspection is scheduled, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected to follow.
In the water sector, the President revealed plans for two major treatment systems aimed at improving access to potable water. One project will see a new treatment plant built in Damango, drawing water from Yapei to supply communities along the corridor. The second system will serve Bole and surrounding areas, sourcing water from the Chache Black Water River to provide clean drinking water to settlements along the Chache–Bole road.
To strengthen agriculture in the region, a Farmer Service Centre will be established at Saka. The facility will be equipped with tractors, ploughs, combined harvesters, planters and boom sprayers, giving farmers access to modern equipment to boost productivity.
On infrastructure, President Mahama announced that the Bole main road will be upgraded into a dual carriageway, while roads within Bole township will be rehabilitated and extended toward Songyo and nearby communities. Additional road projects include the Seripe–Dakrupe–Kebelmar road, the Gbampe–Hariri–Mandari road, the Coco Research road shortcut, and the Gbinfu to Manfuli riverside road.
Education also featured prominently in the development agenda, with the President confirming that Yapei will receive a new secondary school to reduce the burden on students who currently travel long distances to access secondary education in towns such as Bole, Tamale and Bupei.
President Mahama expressed confidence in the successful delivery of the projects, assuring residents that tangible progress would be visible before the end of his mandate in 2028.
“We are sure that by the end of my mandate, I will be coming back several times to commission several of these projects,” he said.
