Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has embarked on a monitoring tour of selected training centres under the One Million Coders Program (OMCP) in the Greater Accra Region, reaffirming government’s commitment to building a digitally skilled population.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, forms part of ongoing efforts to evaluate the effectiveness and readiness of the initiative as it continues to expand nationwide. The Minister and his team visited key centres including Accra College of Education in Ayawaso West, Gbegbeise JHS in Ablekuma West, and the Mamprobi Community Information Centre in Ablekuma South.
At each stop, the Minister engaged directly with trainees, facilitators, and programme coordinators, gathering feedback on the learning experience and assessing the progress of participants. The interactions provided insight into both the achievements and the challenges facing the rollout of the programme.
Speaking to participants, Mr. George emphasized the importance of digital skills in today’s global economy, noting that the initiative is central to Ghana’s broader transformation agenda. He stressed that the programme is designed to create opportunities for young people and ensure equitable access to technology-driven education.
“This initiative is about opening doors,” he said. “We are preparing our young people with the skills needed to compete globally and contribute meaningfully to national development.”
The Minister also inspected infrastructure and connectivity at the centres to determine their capacity to support both physical and virtual training. While commending facilitators for their dedication and participants for their enthusiasm, he assured stakeholders that government remains committed to improving the programme based on feedback from the ground.
The One Million Coders Program, a flagship initiative of the Ministry, is being implemented in partnership with technology organisations and training institutions. It aims to provide inclusive and flexible digital training opportunities across all 16 regions of Ghana.
Officials say the monitoring exercise will be extended to other parts of the country in the coming weeks, as efforts intensify to scale up the programme and deepen its national impact.
