Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama has honoured his commitment to support Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian who recently survived a xenophobic attack in South Africa, by helping him establish a cement distribution and hardware business.
Asamoah, whose ordeal gained widespread attention after disturbing videos of the attack circulated on social media, returned to Ghana with assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His situation sparked national concern and conversations about how best to support Ghanaians facing hardship abroad.
Following his return, efforts were initiated to help him rebuild his life. Those efforts have now materialised into a fully set-up business venture, offering him a new source of livelihood.
Confirmation of the development came on Friday, May 15, through a social media update by an aide to Mahama, who indicated that all processes required to establish the business have been successfully completed.
The initiative forms part of Mahama’s broader intervention to give Asamoah a fresh start after the trauma he experienced. The support is expected to provide both financial stability and a renewed sense of purpose.
Earlier in the week, Mahama donated GH¢200,000 to Asamoah to support his immediate needs, including spending time with his family before relocating to Accra to begin operations.
The businessman has also used the opportunity to encourage Ghanaians living in South Africa who may be facing similar challenges to consider returning home and contributing to the country’s development.
Prior to the incident, Asamoah had expressed interest in transitioning into the hardware business, having previously worked in nails and hairdressing while in South Africa.
The latest development comes against the backdrop of renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, raising calls for stronger protection and support for migrants across the continent.
