President John Dramani Mahama has concluded his tour of the Northern Region, marked by major interventions in the energy, healthcare and economic sectors, reinforcing government’s commitment to the #ResettingGhana agenda.
During the tour, President Mahama inspected newly acquired transformers at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) yard in Tamale, as part of efforts to stabilise power supply across the region. He noted that many existing transformers have become overstretched due to rising demand, explaining that infrastructure installed decades ago is now serving far larger populations, resulting in frequent instability.
He expressed optimism about the future of the energy sector, highlighting plans to localise transformer production to strengthen national capacity and ensure long-term sustainability. The President also commended NEDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for their ongoing work to improve electricity distribution.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, indicated that government has moved to the deployment stage of high-capacity transformers, with more installations planned across the Northern operational area. He disclosed that although about 400 transformers were initially requested, government is providing 500 units to significantly enhance power distribution and reliability, while appealing to residents for patience as work continues.
In the health sector, President Mahama inspected ongoing construction of a cardiology centre at the Tamale Teaching Hospital under the MahamaCares (Ghana Medical Trust Fund). The facility is expected to strengthen specialised healthcare delivery, particularly in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions, and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for advanced care.
He reiterated government’s commitment to investing in modern health infrastructure to improve access to quality care and achieve better health outcomes nationwide.
As part of efforts to boost economic activity, President Mahama also cut the sod for the construction of a 24-hour economy market at Kukuo in Tamale. The project forms part of a broader initiative to establish modern markets across all 261 districts to promote continuous commercial activity and support local economies.
The Kukuo market is expected to include storage facilities, security posts, healthcare services and food courts to enable round-the-clock operations. The initiative will also support the agricultural value chain by providing farmers with reliable access to markets, reducing post-harvest losses and improving incomes.
The Northern Region tour forms part of President Mahama’s broader #ResettingGhana programme aimed at modernising infrastructure and delivering sustainable development across the country.
