In a bid to shield consumers from rising costs while supporting local producers, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced plans to explore alternatives to imported polymers with sachet water manufacturers. Discussions are set to take place on Wednesday, April 8, as the government seeks solutions to escalating production expenses in the sector.
The announcement comes after a planned price increase, scheduled to take effect today, was suspended following consultations between government officials and industry representatives. The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) had proposed raising prices, citing a global shortage of polymers and increased production costs influenced by geopolitical tensions, notably the US–Iran conflict. Proposed new rates ranged from GH¢8 at the ex-factory level to GH¢15 at retail.
Speaking on Citi Prime News on Monday, April 6, Kofi Addo, Chief Commercial Officer at the Ministry, emphasized the government’s dual commitment to supporting businesses and protecting consumers.
“Yes, they have raised an issue concerning the polymers. We will discuss with them and look at opportunities available. Who knows, there may be other alternatives to the polymers. Who knows whether we have some of these ingredients in the local market. Whatever it takes, government is committed to engage the manufacturers and producers to make sure that this issue is addressed amicably,” he said.
Mr. Addo stressed that any resolution will aim to prevent disruptions to supply and avoid imposing additional financial burdens on consumers, signaling a proactive approach to balancing industry needs with public interest.
