President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Arusha, Tanzania, ahead of the opening of the Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

President Mahama, who is attending as the Special Guest of Honour, is set to make history as the first Ghanaian President to address the continental court.
The opening ceremony will also mark the launch of the 20th anniversary of the Court under the theme: “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.” The milestone celebration is expected to reflect on the Court’s achievements over the past two decades in advancing justice and human rights protection across the continent.
Warm Reception at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, President Mahama was welcomed by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kom, alongside other senior officials.
Also present to receive him were Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, with additional responsibility to Tanzania, H.E. Paul Evans Aidoo, and Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, a Justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court who also serves as a judge of the African Court.
Bilateral Meeting with Tanzanian President
According to his official schedule, President Mahama will hold talks on Monday morning with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan before participating in proceedings at the Court.
His keynote address at the opening ceremony is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. (Ghana Time), where he is expected to speak on the importance of strengthening democratic governance, judicial independence, and the protection of fundamental human rights across Africa.
Accompanying Delegation
The President is accompanied by Legal Counsel, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, as well as Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
Shortly after his arrival, President Mahama shared a message on his official Facebook page, stating:

His participation underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to continental justice systems and the promotion of human and peoples’ rights throughout Africa.
