Amidst public outcry following a viral video showing the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, gifting dollar notes to Nana Agradaa, the government has affirmed its commitment to addressing the concerns raised with “utmost seriousness.”
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, conveyed this assurance during an interview on Citi FM.
His remarks followed widespread criticism of the Gold Board CEO’s gesture, with many questioning its appropriateness against the backdrop of prevailing economic challenges.
While Sammy Gyamfi has since apologized, describing the cash handover as a private act of kindness unintended for public consumption, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, summoned him to provide a detailed explanation on Monday, May 12 at the presidency.
Minister Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that this action by the Chief of Staff underscores the government’s intent to thoroughly address the issue
“Generally, as a government, we respect the sentiments of Ghanaians,” stated Mr. Kwakye Ofosu. “We know that since the airing of the video, various sentiments have been expressed.” He further added, “It is part of the reasons why the Chief of Staff took the step he has taken today [May 12].“
Highlighting the administration’s commitment to higher governance standards, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted, “We’re a government that is committed to governing the country in a different manner and holding ourselves to high standards. So, we take on board the concerns that the public has raised. This shows that people expect a much departure from the free fall that happened under the NPP administration.”
He also indicated that President John Dramani Mahama will be fully briefed upon his return to Ghana, at which point any necessary further action will be determined.
