Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially launched Ghana’s first electric bus fleet on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to modernize its public transport system.
The electric buses will begin test operations this week, a key component of Dr. Bawumia’s plan to introduce sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions across the country.
At the event, Albert Adu Boahen, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), highlighted the preparations made to ensure the buses’ efficient use. He mentioned that the electric buses would operate on routes such as Oyibi-Accra, Accra-Amasaman, and Ashaiman-Accra, with an anticipated 40% reduction in transportation costs.
Boahen also shared plans to install charging stations at all MTTD locations in the capital to support the electric fleet.
“This initiative represents a 40% savings in operational costs, which will enable us to reinvest in enhancing our services. We also intend to pass part of these savings onto passengers through more affordable fares and improved reliability,” he said.
The introduction of electric buses is expected to offer a smoother, quieter ride, greatly enhancing the passenger experience. Boahen emphasized that the management is fully aware of the evolving demands in the transport industry and is committed to adapting accordingly with the right infrastructure and resources in place.
