President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated the Goldbod Taskforce, a special unit established to combat the illegal trading of gold and safeguard Ghana’s mineral wealth.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Tuesday at the National Security Headquarters in Accra. In his address, President Mahama charged members of the Taskforce to carry out their duties with integrity and avoid any form of compromise or abuse of power.
He emphasized that the Goldbod initiative is a flagship programme under the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 manifesto, and as such, all efforts to ensure its success would be prioritized.
“The time has come for Ghanaians to fully benefit from our mineral exploration,” President Mahama declared. “We believe Ghanaians must be the first beneficiaries of our natural resources.”
He expressed concern that although Ghana remains Africa’s top gold producer and ranks sixth globally, the country has yet to fully leverage this advantage for national development.
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to reversing this trend and ensuring that Ghana’s gold resources are harnessed in a way that directly benefits the Ghanaian people.
The Goldbod Taskforce is expected to play a critical role in regulating gold trading activities, protecting national interests, and supporting the broader goal of economic transformation through resource governance.
