Samson Deen Says Para Athletes Deserve Equal Visibility as Glasgow Journey Strengthens Ghana’s Road to LA28 Paralympic Games

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting disability inclusion, sporting excellence and national pride by sponsoring four accredited Administrative Media Officers to provide comprehensive coverage of Team Ghana’s participation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The officers, who depart for Scotland on Monday, 20 July 2026, are Michael Obeng, Administrative Media Officer for the Para Swimming Association; Bill Eshun, Administrative Media Officer for the Para Powerlifting Association; Prince Andrew Dornu Leiku and Theophilus Sampah, NPC Ghana Media-Level Administrative Officers.

Accredited by the Commonwealth Games organizers, the four officers will provide minute-by-minute reports, photographs, videos, interviews, feature stories and behind-the-scenes coverage of Ghana’s Paralympic contingent throughout the Games, ensuring that Ghanaians at home and across the world remain connected to every milestone achieved by the nation’s para-athletes.

Beyond reporting, the assignment presents a unique opportunity for the officers to broaden their professional knowledge and practical experience in international sports journalism, media operations, digital storytelling and Paralympic communications, reinforcing NPC Ghana’s long-term investment in specialized sports media development.

The deployment marks another important milestone in NPC Ghana’s pioneering Media Administrative Officers Programme, launched in 2025 under the leadership of NPC Ghana and African Paralympic Committee President, Mr. Samson Deen.

The initiative saw the appointment of 38 journalists to various para sport federations and the NPC Ghana Communications Department as part of a national campaign to reposition para sports as a powerful tool for inclusion, empowerment, education and sporting excellence. The programme was designed to increase public awareness, improve media coverage, educate journalists on disability sport and integrate communication professionals into Ghana’s broader para sport development agenda.

One year later, the accreditation of four Media Administrative Officers to cover an international multi-sport event demonstrates the success of the initiative and affirms NPC Ghana’s belief that sustainable sports development requires investment not only in athletes and coaches but also in administrators, classifiers, technical officials, medical personnel and professional communicators. During the Games, the officers will provide comprehensive coverage of Ghana’s five-member Paralympic contingent.

Representing Ghana at Glasgow 2026 are Zinabu Issah, Hayford Addai and Nkegbe Botsyo in Para Athletics, Promise “Wonder Atsu” Aheto in Para Swimming and Tahiru Haruna in Para Powerlifting.

The four officers will follow the athletes from their final training sessions through every stage of competition, documenting their preparations, performances, interviews, medal pursuits and inspirational stories for audiences back home.

NPC Ghana believes that telling the stories behind the athletes is just as important as reporting competition results. Their journeys of resilience, determination and perseverance continue to demonstrate that disability is never a barrier to excellence when talent is supported with opportunity.

Addressing the officers during pre-departure formalities, Mr. Samson Deen urged them to approach the assignment with discipline, professionalism and patriotism, reminding them that they were travelling not merely as journalists but as ambassadors of Ghana’s Paralympic Movement.

“You are not travelling to Glasgow simply to report results. You are going to tell the stories of courage, sacrifice and determination that define our athletes. Your work should inspire every Ghanaian to appreciate the value of inclusion and recognize the excellence of our Paralympians.”

He encouraged the officers to remain focused throughout the Games and continue serving as a source of motivation for the athletes.

“Remain focused, be prepared to sacrifice and continue inspiring our athletes to stay disciplined and target the podium. Glasgow 2026 is not only about medals; it is another important qualification pathway towards the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. Every performance, every lesson and every experience will contribute to Ghana’s preparations for LA28.”

Mr. Deen further noted that the responsibility of the media officers extends beyond publishing news reports. According to him, their work should educate the public about para sports, promote disability inclusion and strengthen national support for athletes representing Ghana on the international stage.

He also commended the Government of Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for working closely with NPC Ghana to provide the logistical and administrative support necessary for the team’s successful participation.

According to Mr. Deen, the collaboration between Government and NPC Ghana has created a conducive environment that allows athletes to focus fully on training and competition.

“The Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have provided our team with the logistical support needed to compete confidently. It is now our responsibility to repay that confidence through hard work, outstanding performances and medal-winning achievements that will make President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana proud.”

The Committee believes that the deployment of dedicated Media Administrative Officers to Glasgow represents a significant shift in Ghana’s approach to sports development, recognizing communication as an essential pillar alongside athlete preparation, coaching, technical officiating and governance.

For many years, para sports received only occasional media attention during major competitions. Through the Media Administrative Officers Programme, NPC Ghana is building a sustainable communication system that ensures consistent visibility for athletes, competitions and development programmes throughout the year.

By investing in specialized sports journalists and integrating them into the country’s para sport structure, NPC Ghana is creating a new generation of media professionals equipped to tell authentic stories that inspire participation, influence public policy and promote equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

As Team Ghana prepares to compete on one of the Commonwealth’s biggest sporting stages, Michael Obeng, Bill Eshun, Theophilus Sampah and Prince Andrew Dornu Leiku will ensure that every race, every lift, every swim and every inspiring moment reaches homes across Ghana.

Their assignment represents more than media coverage. It is a national mission to showcase Ghana’s Paralympians, celebrate inclusion, educate the public and strengthen the country’s journey towards Los Angeles 2028, while reinforcing the conviction that every Ghanaian athlete deserves equal recognition, equal support and an equal opportunity to inspire the nation.
