Vice President of Ghana, Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership in securing a historic United Nations resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as one of humanity’s gravest crimes.
Writing on Facebook, Opoku-Agyemang welcomed the President back home, stating, “Akwaaba, Your Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama. It was an honour to join Ghanaians in welcoming you back home following your leadership in securing the historic United Nations resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.”
She described the UN resolution as a “consequential moment” that confronts a long-standing injustice while affirming the importance of acknowledging difficult historical periods. “It is a recognition of the past, a moral statement, and a challenge to preserve and present this history with accuracy and seriousness,” she added.
Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that Ghana’s initiative demonstrates principled engagement with the history of the African continent and the wider diaspora. She hailed the achievement as a proud moment not just for Ghana, but for Africa and people of African descent worldwide.
