President John Dramani Mahama has justified plans for a fresh SIM card re-registration exercise, describing the previous nationwide process as flawed, ineffective, and ultimately unhelpful to Ghanaians.

Speaking during his Resetting Ghana tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, the President said the earlier exercise imposed unnecessary hardship on citizens without producing credible or useful results.
According to him, the challenges stemmed from poor coordination among key institutions, particularly the Ministry of Communications and the National Identification Authority. He noted that the lack of proper collaboration undermined efforts to effectively link SIM cards to verified national identity data.
“If you recall, we were asked to re-register our SIM cards, and the process was very challenging. There was a disconnect between the authorities responsible, and in the end, it did not benefit Ghanaians. It was largely ineffective,” he stated.
President Mahama emphasized that the new registration exercise will be fully integrated with the Ghana Card system to ensure accurate identification of SIM card users. He added that the improved system will allow individuals to update their details seamlessly without the need to queue at registration centres.
